The Buddhist tradition is a vital component of our human heritage. Its contemporary relevance is evident. It is basic to the pan-Asian cultural identity.
Visual culture is an important element of the tradition. What is expressed in the texts and practices emerges also in Buddhist Art and Architecture. The Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies (‘OCBS’) is a Recognised Independent Centre of Oxford University (RIC). Thanks to the generosity of the BDK (Numata Fund) it has established Europe’s first endowed Chair in Buddhist Studies. Lecturerships are also sought in Pali Buddhist Studies, East Asian Buddhist Studies, Tibetan & Himalayan Buddhist Studies, the Social Dimension of the Buddhist tradition and Buddhist Art and Archaeology. The Art & Archaeology post will have a vital role in developing the appreciation of this important visual culture.
