About Us

The Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies

The OCBS was established in 2007. It is a Recognised Independent Centre (RIC) of the University of Oxford. It promotes the academic study of Buddhist texts, societies, theories and practices within the University. It is committed to maintaining the highest academic standards.

The OCBS also aims to promote understanding of the importance of Buddhist insights across a wide range of academic disciplines; and to work in partnership with leading institutions to apply approaches derived from studying Buddhism to contemporary issues.

 

What OCBS Does

Supports the establishment of posts in Buddhist Studies (Professorships, Lecturerships, and Visitorships)

It works with Oxford University’s Oriental Institute, through its Buddhist Studies Unit,  to develop courses and other academic activities.

Holds conferences and lecture series, and sponsors guest lectures

Provides a flourishing environment for academic activity in its centre in Wolfson College, Oxford

Publishes the OCBS Monograph Series

What OCBS Aims To Do (in the very near future)

Establish distance learning and online learning Buddhist Studies programmes

Set up an online journal

Create a research base of Buddhist practices and analyses with potential application to mental health and well-being.
