Some pages in OCBS use special romanized charachters for Pali and Sanskrit words. If you can't view them correctly, you may need to install a special font that is compatible with UTF-8 encoding, and contains these charachters.

Do I need to install a font?

If you see the following words correctly, you don't need to do anything:

  • Sasāra
  • Nirvāa
  • The following 4 letters have lines above them: Ā Ū ā ī
  • The following 4 letters have dots below them: Ṇ Ṭ Ḍ Ṣ

Can't see any of them correctly?

  • Check your browsers encoding. If should be automatically set to UTF-8. You can also manually change it to UTF-8:
    • Explorer: View > Encoding > More > Unicode (UTF-8)
    • Fireforx: View > Charachter Encoding > More Encodings > Unicode > Unicode (UTF-8)

Your browser is set to UTF-8, but charachters are still not showing correctly?

Download and install fonts:

  • You can install a freely distributed unicode font called Verajja
  • You would need to "unzip" it with a special software that opens 7-zip files. It can be found here and here.
  • More instructions and resources are in the Pali Font Resources Page.

You can also install Arial Unicode or Arial Unicode MS which are distributed with Microsoft Office™. They are not freely distributed.

We also use a special font for titles and headings. Please download the Gandhari Unicode font
